GCC Students Discover Unexpected Source of College Funding
Twenty-five Glendale Community College students will have the remainder of their GCC education paid for by the Phoenix Workforce Connection (PWC). The PWC offers many essential services to students and job seekers including financial aid under certain conditions. GCC Career Services Manager Scott Schulz recently arranged for PWC staffers to visit GCC classrooms to discuss the funding opportunities available for nursing and bioscience students. As a result of these presentations, 22 GCC nursing students and three GCC biosciences students contacted PWC, applied for assistance, and will have the rest of their education at GCC paid for, plus work supplies upon graduation. For more information about the PWC, visit
http://phoenix.gov/PHXWIN. There are also many GCC scholarships available to GCC students or potential students. For more information about scholarships, contact Frances Mateo at
frances.mateo@gcmail.maricopa.edu or 623.845.3147.
Distinguished GCC Prof. to Attend Prague Seminar in July
As part of Glendale Community College's commitment to International Education, GCC English Professor Ruth Callahan of Sun City will go to Prague, the Czech Republic, to attend a seminar hosted by the Maricopa Community Colleges. Callahan will participate in lectures and round table discussions in the Prague Seminar Program, a two-week pilot program in July 2006. GCC's International Education Committee selected her to be one of ten faculty members—one from each of the ten Maricopa colleges—participating in the program. With Prague College serving as the host institution, the program will enrich participants' understanding of a society and region undergoing massive changes from a Soviet-era economy to a free-market model.
