Four GCC Faculty Receive "Excellence in Teaching Awards"
From a large pool of outstanding faculty at Glendale Community College, four professors will receive the first annual "Excellence in Teaching Awards" on May 10. Recipients are Ruth Callahan, English; Anne Dudley, Mathematics, Mary Jane Onnen, English; and Jeffrey Pommerville, Biology. "The awards committee was overwhelmed by the quality of the faculty nominated, and the decision was next to impossible," says selection committee facilitator Dr. Stephen Williams. Winners received plaques and were honored at an Awards Luncheon held on campus.
Jeffrey Pommerville
has taught Biology for more than 25 years and is recognized nationally as an expert in bioterrorism agents and techniques. He has spoken on this topic at conferences, classes, community seminars and on the radio. He has served in educational and teaching leadership roles too numerous to list, and has received major national honors, including the Ohaus 2003 Award for Innovation in Science Teaching from the National Science Teachers Association. He is author of Fundamentals of Microbiology and Laboratory Fundamentals of Microbiology, and has published many papers in the American Biology Teacher.
Ruth Callahan
has long been known for her commitment to the "adventure of ideas," as her nomination stated. She continuously strives to improve instruction. Her willingness to spend time carefully critiquing student essays leads to significant improvement in their writing. She has high expectations for her students, assigns extensive reading, and requires oral presentations. Setting the academic bar high, she kindles a spark that leads many students to research esoteric topics and experience the joy of learning.
Anne Dudley
loves her job after many years of teaching. Her colleagues routinely hear feedback that her students enjoy her classes and that she makes learning math fun. She consistently encourages colleagues to step outside their comfort zones and try innovative approaches in the classroom. She consistently advocates for what is best for students and mentors them in the GCC mentorship program.
Mary Jane Onnen
is described by her department chair as "absolutely passionate about teaching and learning." She is credentialed to teach English, English as a Second Language, and Reading, and desires to help all her students succeed. Her innovative skills have been added to advanced ESL writing courses where short-term classes allow faster progression for students. Many semesters, Onnen teaches more classes than are required to broaden her experience.
