Picasso, Goya, Much More Featured in GCC Library Art Walking Tour, April 20
An art collection that is a hidden gem in the West Valley will be unveiled at the Glendale Community College Library on Thurs., April 20, during a free public premiere to be held from 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A brief ceremony at 1:30 p.m. will open the tour and include refreshments.
A highlight of the opening will be the introduction of the new walking/listening tour. New high-tech listening wands will allow viewers to hear descriptions of selected artworks at their own pace. This flexibility enables listeners to view only as many pieces as they desire and in any sequence.
According to GCC Art Professor Darlene Goto, a member of the Tour Development Committee, "It is time to share with the public the art treasures GCC owns. We have an amazing collection that is truly a self-instructing treasure trove. It's quite an educational asset to this community."
The grand opening is the culmination of a four-year project that involved fund-raising, developing the tour script, researching and purchasing listening devices, and planning for security measures.
The collection includes two works by Picasso, a Goya etching, an extensive mask collection, pieces by renowned Arizona artists, ancient Chinese pottery, Japanese woodblock prints and much more. These works have been acquired throughout GCC's 40-year history.
