GCC Presents The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, April 7,-8, 13-15
While the title of the play, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, suggests a musical, the play is actually a wildly funny farce that pokes fun at the ridiculous aspects of show business and the silly thrillers of Hollywood films. The play is filled with nonstop laughter--at least for the characters who don't get killed off. The Musical Comedy Murders runs April 7-15, 2006, at the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Center, 59th Ave. and Vogel (first stop light north of Olive). Show times are April 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m.; April 9 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $8.00 adults, $7.00 seniors, and $5.00 students. The Box Office opens one hour before curtain. Synopsis: The team responsible for a Broadway flop (during which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious "Stage Door Slasher") assemble to audition their new show to a possible financier at the home of a wealthy patron. The house is replete with sliding panels, secret passageways and a German maid who is apparently four different people--all of which figure diabolically in the comic mayhem which follows when the infamous "Slasher" strikes again. While the troupe prepares for the audition, a blizzard cuts off retreat, bodies start dropping, knives spring out of nowhere, masked figures drag victims into closets, and accusing fingers point in all directions. However, and with no thanks to the bumbling police inspector who snowshoes in to investigate, the mystery is solved in the nick of time and the "Slasher" unmasked. Meanwhile, the audience has been treated to a sidesplitting good time and a generous serving of the author's biting and irreverent wit.
Playwright John Bishop enjoyed a critically acclaimed run of The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 both on and off Broadway.
GCC Director Virginia Ludders understands that sometimes an audience "simply wants to come to the theater to relax, laugh and escape the world and all its problems." The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 affords the opportunity to do just that.
