International Festival at GCC, April 5 & 6
The music, dance, and flavors of many world cultures will come alive at the annual International Festival at Glendale Community College during two days of entertainment, food and fun. The festival, sponsored by the International Education Program at GCC, will be held April 5 and 6, under large tents on the main mall of the campus at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. Live entertainment runs continuously on the main stage from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. both days. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is also free. This year's festival will feature performances of music and dance representing the cultures of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Japan, China, Iberia, and Celtic peoples. A special performance of Flamenco dance and music will be featured at 11:00 a.m. on Wed., April 5. For more information and a detailed schedule of events, contact Ken Bus at 623.845.3136.
GCC Forensics Team Brings Home Trophies from Prague
For the third time in three trips, the Glendale Community College Forensics Team has returned victorious from the International Forensics Association (IFA) Tournament. This year's tournament was in Prague, Czech Republic. Returning on March 18, the GCC team brought home a first place trophy in the Community College Sweepstakes and a second place trophy in the Overall Sweepstakes, which included colleges and universities from all over the world. Individual GCC students came home with many wins in specific categories of performance as well. Since 2002, Forensics Director Kirt Shineman has taken his students every two years to the IFA international competition and they have excelled every time. In addition to this year's big win, they also took first place in the Community College Sweepstakes in Madrid, Spain, in 2004. In 2002, the team took first place in the Community College Competition and second place in Overall International Champions in Rome, Italy.
GCC Hosts Free Concert of Modern Folk Music, April 3
Folk songs of conscience and romance will be presented by Duo Guardabarranco at Glendale Community College Mon., April 3, at 7:30 p.m. The free concert will be held in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The duo, composed of siblings Salvador and Katia Cardenal from Nicaragua, are composers and performers of "…amazing, beautiful songs," according to composer and recording artist Jackson Browne who produced their first album. Salvador is renowned for his evocative guitar playing, Katia's voice has been described as beautifully soaring, and their lyrics are passionate, yet moving and gentle.
