New Certificate Helps Students Become Personal Trainers, Coaches

A new "Strength and Personal Training" Certificate of Completion offered at Glendale Community College gives students a rapid pathway to an in-demand career field. This certificate prepares students for employment in the fitness industry as strength or personal training coaches or trainers. Students gain knowledge of human physiology and anatomy, prevention and treatment of exercise-related injuries, emergency response readiness, health appraisals and assessments, application of fitness principles and strength training techniques, and much more. The certificate requires only 31 credit hours--most Associates degrees require 60-65 credits, and most Bachelors degrees require 125 or more credits. Certificates of Completion are a good choice for those who seek immediate entry into the work force or on-the-job advancement. Free Job Resources for Community Offered by GCC Career Services

Career Services at Glendale Community College is a hidden gem of employment resources, available not only to GCC students but to the public as well. Computers are available to develop résumés and for Internet research. A job board and job search binders allow individuals to review current openings valley-wide. Career counselors assist individuals explore career options and administer interest-assessment tests to suggest career possibilities. Visitors can access labor market information about local trends, salaries and training requirements for specific jobs. Seminars are offered on résumé writing, interviewing, job search strategies, exploring career options and more. Classes are offered in a variety of career and personal development areas. An annual Career Expo brings scores of employers to GCC to talk to students and the public about jobs and careers. All events and services are free except for the interest-assessment tests that average $10 to $15 each. This year's Career Expo will be held Wed., Mar. 29, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. GCC's Visiting Professor Series Presents "Writing to Get Published," Feb. 22

GCC Journalism Professor Julie Knapp will give a free lecture, "Writing to Get Published," at the Visiting Professor Lecture Series Wed., Feb. 22. The series is a joint project of Glendale Community College (GCC) and the Glendale Public Library (GPL) and features one GCC professor per month, Jan. through Apr. and Aug. through Nov. Knapp's lecture will be held from 7-8 p.m. at the GPL, located at 5959 W. Brown in Glendale. She will discuss researching a story, finding a market for your story, using a query letter versus a phone call, using the right format, and understanding the rules of the game.
