GCC Receives Fire Truck from City of Glendale
A long-term, productive partnership between Glendale Community College and the City of Glendale yielded a big reward on Jan. 13 when the Glendale Fire Department dedicated a retiring fire truck to GCC for a nominal $1 year lease. The truck, a 1986 pumper, will be used to train GCC Fire Academy and Fire Science students--many of whom will later serve as firefighters for West Valley municipalities and beyond.
Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs presented a large symbolic truck key to GCC Interim President Jean Ann Abel. Attending the event from GCC were Dean of Instruction for Business and Technology Randy Kimmens, Applied Technology Department Chair Doug DeSanti, and Assistant Department Chair for Fire Science Mike Osborn. Attending from the City of Glendale were Fire Chief Mike Burdick, Assistant Chief Jim Higgins, and Deputy Chief Dave Villalovos.
The brief ceremony took place at the City of Glendale Fire Station #157, on the northeast corner of the GCC Campus at 59th Avenue and Mountain View. Building a working fire station on the GCC campus is an example of the City-College partnership that benefits student training.
"This truck will be used in fire simulations and other training by hundreds of GCC Fire Academy and Fire Science students," said DeSanti. "This generous donation is yet another example of the great working partnership that GCC has enjoyed with the City of Glendale and that benefits students."
GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. For more information about GCC's Fire Academy or Fire Science programs, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/fsc. Contact Program Director Mike Osborn at
