GCC Gauchos Named NJCAA 2005 Football National Champions
The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced that, "Glendale Community College, with a perfect 11-0 record, is the 2005 NJCAA Football National Champion."
GCC beat Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC-Michigan) in the Valley of the Sun Bowl on Dec. 3, to secure the Gaucho's third NJCAA national championship. Ironically, the Gauchos also beat GRCC in 1988's Valley of the Sun Bowl to win their first national championship. In 2000, the Gauchos beat Garden City Community College for GCC's second championship title.
"The entire Gaucho team, Head Coach Joe Kersting, and his coaching staff deserve kudos for a job well done--the game was riveting," says GCC's Interim President Jean Ann Abel. Particularly outstanding players included Johnny Sanchez, Torrey Huckaby, quarterback Tim Brockwell who completed 17 of 30 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns, and Eric McCain who had six catches for 177 yards. McCain, a 6-foot-4 receiver, was named Glendale's Most Valuable Player in the Valley of the Sun Bowl. Kersting called him the best receiver in GCC history.
Asked what made this team special, Kersting replied, "This national title is the culmination of a lot of sacrifices made by every team member. This team does four things well: they know how to work, they know how to practice, they like each other and they love to play the game of football."
Coach Kersting was recently named the NJCAA Region I Coach of the Year. Quarterback Brockwell was named the NJCAA Region 1 Offensive Player of the Year and Western States Football League Player of the Year.
