Legendary Navajo "Code Talker" at GCC, Nov. 14
Joe Kellwood, a legendary Navajo Code Talker of World War II, will give a free lecture at Glendale Community College as part of Native American Week festivities. Kellwood will share his unique experiences on Mon., Nov. 14, at 11:00 a.m. on the GCC central mall. He will speak near an authentic tipi, to be assembled through a demonstration at approximately 9:00 a.m. that morning. The Code Talkers were critical to the war's secure communications as Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity. The Japanese never broke the code, and the code talkers were responsible for saving many American lives.
Other Native American Week activities at GCC include:
a free lecture by Northern Arapaho Sergio Maldonado on Tues., Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m. in the GCC Student Union Lounge. He will speak on his experiences and Arapaho culture. Maldonado is an adjunct professor of American Indian Studies at Mesa Community College and the West campus of ASU.
a free Native American fashion show on Thurs., Nov. 17, at 11:00 a.m. in the GCC Student Union cafeteria. At that time, Fort McDowell Yavapai Karen Ray will also offer a storytelling presentation on Yavapai culture and traditions.
the sale of Indian Frybread on the mall near the tipi display on Nov. 14 and Nov.16 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. both days.
For more information on any of these events, call 623.845.3565 or 623.845.3078. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale.
