GCC Wins First Place at "Best of the West"

After a decade of performances yielding hundreds of national awards and two international awards, the Glendale Community College Forensics Program won first place in the higher education category at the 13th Annual "Best of the West" Awards program, Oct. 27. The competition, sponsored by the Western Maricopa Coalition (WESTMARC), recognizes outstanding contributions to the image, lifestyle and economic development of western Maricopa County. The GCC Forensics Team, coached by Director Kirt Shineman, teaches many types of public speaking, performance and debate. The team has acquired an international with several wins at international meets, most notably when it won 1st and 2nd place awards at the 15th Annual International Forensics Association Tournament in Madrid in March 2004. GCC is the only MCCCD college offering a formal forensics program.

Middle East Policy Expert Gives Free Lecture at GCC, Nov. 15

What are the perspectives on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East from an international peace talks participant? In celebration of International Education Week, Glendale Community College presents a free presentation answering that question Tues., Nov. 15, at noon in the GCC Student Union Lounge. Dr. Bishara Bahbah, a leading expert on the Middle East peace process, will speak on "An Assessment of U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East." As an international student himself, Bahbah received his Ph.D. from Harvard, where he later taught in the Kennedy School of Government and became the associate director of the university's Middle East Institute. He is the former editor-in-chief of a Palestinian daily newspaper and a former member of the Palestinian delegation to the peace talks in the 1990s. He will take questions from the audience as part of the event, coordinated by GCC's International Education Program. Free Student Art Show Opens at GCC, Nov. 8

Featuring hundreds of student artworks, Glendale Community College presents the annual Student Art Exhibit from Tues., Nov. 8 through Wed., Nov. 30 in the GCC Student Union Lounge, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. A reception honoring student artists will be held on Sun., Nov. 13, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Lounge. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Student Union Lounge is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Students' works will include drawings, paintings in several media, photographs, digital photographs, graphics/animation, multimedia works, ceramics and sculpture. The exhibit will be juried prior to opening to the public and awards will be displayed on the winning pieces. Relationship Expert to Give Free Lecture at GCC, Nov. 9 Medical doctor turned relationship expert Dr. Greg Baer visits Glendale Community College on Wed., Nov. 9 to present "Real Love: No More Lies, No More Games." The free lecture will be held from 7-9 p.m. in the GCC Student Union Lounge. "Dr. Baer is a physician and published author who recovered from drug addiction and near-suicide to teach people across the country what he's learned about unconditional love," says GCC Communication Professor Dr. Doug Brenner, who arranged Baer's visit to Arizona. "He teaches people the simple steps to find real love and the profound happiness that always accompanies it. People will be moved by his presentation." GCC is providing this lecture free to the public as a community service. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale and there is plenty of free parking.
