Disabled Students "Give Back" to GCC with Silent Art Auction, Nov. 8-13

Disabled individuals who have achieved major health improvements through their participation in the Adapted Physical Fitness class at Glendale Community College (GCC) are "giving back" to the program. Many of these students are artists who are painting again due to their improved health. They are donating many of their artworks to a silent auction to be hosted by the college Nov. 8-13. Other local artists have donated art as well, augmenting the beautiful and eclectic offering.

Proceeds from the auction will fund scholarships for other disabled individuals who wish to enroll in GCC's acclaimed Adapted Physical Education class. The art will be displayed twice for on-site bids or it can be viewed and bids made online at www.gc.maricopa.edu/artauction.

The first display will be held at GCC on Tues., Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in conjunction with a book sale in the center mall. The art will also be on display during Sahuaro Ranch Days at Historic Sahuaro Ranch, Nov. 12-13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale; Historic Sahuaro Ranch is located at 9802 N. 59th Ave. in Glendale.

Two nationally known artists have also donated art to the silent auction. Elmer Yazzie, now deceased, was a long-time student of GCC Adapted PE. In 1989 he was injured in an accident and was confined to a wheelchair with only partial use of his extremities. He learned to use his hands well enough to create wonderful drawings reflecting his Navajo culture—drawings of baskets, pots, horses, buffalo and eagles. Twenty-five of his artworks have been donated to the silent auction.

Tom Wegman, a handicapped Iowa man, is a nationally known bead artist. He intricately beads ordinary things, such as roller skates, transforming them into works of art. He has shown his work several times at the Smithsonian Institution. He is a friend of the GCC Adapted PE Program and has donated a piece of art to the auction. Injured and confined to a wheelchair since 1986, he was pleased to help fund scholarships for others who are handicapped. One piece of his unusual and highly-prized art has been donated.

Bids will close on Nov. 13, 2005, at 4 p.m.. For more information about the auction, call 623.845.3242.

The Adapted PE program at GCC is one-of-a-kind for educational institutions in the southwestern U.S. It boasts a complete and separate fitness center designed and equipped for the handicapped user. It has a 20-year history of raising the general fitness level and augmenting the abilities of thousands of disabled individuals. The cost per semester (4 months) is approximately $70. For more information about the Adapted PE program at GCC, call 623.845.3242 or 623.845.3795.
