The "Pablo Neruda of North American Authors " Speaks, Leads Poetry Workshop at GCC, Oct. 7
Poet-Lawyer-Professor Martín Espada Featured in Hispanic Heritage Month Event
Martín Espada teaches creative writing, Latino poetry, and the works of Pablo Neruda at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Pablo Neruda (1904–1973) was the pen name of Chilean writer Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basualto, considered one of the greatest Spanish-language poets of the 20th century. Espada is Puerto Rican.
His poems have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Harper's, The Nation, and The Best American Poetry. Sandra Cisneros, award-winning author of poems and short stories, says, "Martín Espada is the Pablo Neruda of North American authors."
Prior to teaching at UMass, Espada practiced law as a tenant lawyer, was a bouncer, a factory worker and night shift desk clerk in a hotel that housed transients. His poems are largely political in nature and have been widely published. His seventh collection was published in 2003 as Alabanza: New and Selected Poems (1982-2002). It received the Paterson Award for Sustained Literary Achievement and was named an American Library Association Notable Book of the Year. An earlier collection, Imagine the Angels of Bread, won an American Book Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Another volume, Rebellion is the Circle of a Lover's Hands, received the Paterson Poetry Prize and a PEN/Revson Fellowship. He has won numerous other awards and lectures frequently around the U.S. about his work.
