Five Former GCC Music Students Return as Faculty
Glendale Community College alumni musicians--a guitarist, saxophone and trumpet players, and two sound artists--have returned to their alma mater to teach in the Performing Arts Department this fall. "We're thrilled to have so many former students and accomplished musicians back with us to share what they have learned with current students," says Performing Arts Chair Dr. Robert Albury. Guitarist Dave Buck teaches Class Guitar and gives private lessons. Adam Roberts, saxophone artist, teaches American Jazz and Modern Music. Trumpet player David Thibodeaux teaches Rock Music and Culture, and Paul Gillaspy of Glendale teaches two sections of Live Sound Reinforcement. Mark Kopenits of Glendale teaches Studio Recording and is widely respected on the local music scene. According to Albury, "Mark is considered one of the absolute best at what he does. He owns his own recording studio in Glendale, where recently GRAMMY award-winning country artist Dwight Yoakum stopped by to record new ideas while he was in the Valley." 43 Countries Send Students to GCC, Exceeding Spring 2005 Enrollment
Foreign students from 43 nations now attend Glendale Community College, with international students totaling 115 to exceed last spring's enrollment. In addition to well-known countries such as Italy, Norway and Taiwan, even a small, relatively obscure nation like Burkina Faso (in Western Africa) is represented by one student at GCC—Kalifa Konate is one of 21 international students new this semester. The largest numbers of foreign students come from South Korea and Japan, followed by Canada and the Philippines. The students participate in an active International Students Organization that, along with International Education Program Director Ken Bus, puts on a two-day international festival each spring at GCC, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. For more information about the ISP program, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/isp or call 623.845.3136.
