The artist behind hundreds of local billboards seen by millions during the last 20 years will display his commercial and fine art at Glendale Community College, Sept. 12-28. Rob Richards, Senior V.P. and Creative Director for The Eller Company and a Glendale resident, will open "Diversity" at the artist's reception in the GCC Student Union Lounge on Mon., Sept. 12, 6-8 p.m.. The free exhibit runs through Wed., Sept. 28. Richards will present a retrospective show that features work from his billboard career with Eller and examples of his fine art pieces. Life drawings, gesture studies and western art in mixed media such as acrylics, chalk and pastels will be showcased. His billboard designs include numerous major clients, including Coca-Cola, Budweiser, SRP and Fulton Homes. Richards began his education at GCC, taking numerous art classes before finishing his education by earning an MFA at the Art Center, College of Design, in Pasadena. Math Prof. Learning at TGen to Create Bioinformatics Class
Glendale Community College will someday offer a sophisticated bioinformatics class after math professor Carol Barner, of Peoria, finishes her sabbatical internship at TGen, the Translational Genomics Research Institute. Barner, the first GCC faculty member to intern with TGen, is pursuing a master's degree in Computation Biosciences. The internship provides critical learning, which will help her design a program in Bioinformatics at GCC when she returns to teaching after her sabbatical. Bioinformatics uses math formulas written into computer programs to analyze new genetic discoveries. She is using computer programming to analyze and parse online bioinformatics databases, making their contents more readily accessible to scientists. TGen's mission is to make genomic discoveries and translate them into advances in human health. "This internship program for faculty helps build bridges between the Maricopa Community Colleges and TGen that will likely lead to further collaborations," according to Barner.
