Complex Biotech Instruments Funded by State Grant
The Biotechnology Program at Glendale Community College (GCC) has received a state grant for $156,500 to develop a bioinstrumentation class. The course is based on complex laboratory instrumentation and requires special computers and additional lab equipment for GCC's state-of-the-art biotech lab. Only a few years old, the GCC Biotech Program is making strides in training students to supply the needs of the growing biotech industry in the Valley. The needs will be great as some studies have shown that for every Ph.D. or M.D. level researcher, approximately 10 to 12 biotech staffers will be needed. In addition to developing new curriculum and obtaining grants for equipment, GCC Biotechnology Program Head Dr. James Tuohy has successfully placed several students in summer internships at prestigious valley research labs such as TGen, Barrow Neurological Institute and Sun Health Research Institute. To learn more about GCC's biotechnology program or careers in this field, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/biology/gccbiotech or call Tuohy at 623.845.3845.

GCC Prof's Photos Selected for Museum Postcards
Colorful new postcards featuring the microphotography of a Glendale Community College professor are now on sale at the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum in downtown Phoenix. Geologist Stanley J. Celestian's vivid photos include shots of peridot, amethyst, azurite, malachite, copper and other Arizona minerals. Celestian is known worldwide for his photographs of the microscopic world of minerals. His microphotograph of sulfur was selected for the February 2004 cover of the Journal Of Sulfur Chemistry, published in England. In addition to being a photographer of the very small, Celestian also is known for his photos of the very large—astrophotography of stars and planets.
