GCC Biotech Students Get Rave Reviews in Summer Internships
Four biotechnology students at Glendale Community College (GCC) are working in prestigious internships with local biotech research firms this summer. The students interviewed for these highly competitive learning opportunities.
Pilar Hyder, of Phoenix, works at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGEN) with Dr. Pamela Pollock, head of the Melanoma Genetics Research Unit. Hyder says, "The GCC Biotech Program has been a wonderful first step in my biotech career goals. Being in this program prepared me well for my internship." Her TGEN supervisor agrees. Pollock says, "Pilar is a great addition to our lab and came well prepared in the basics. She 'hit the ground running' when she arrived."
Jeanne Sasse, of Phoenix, is also interning at TGEN, working on a brain cancer project. "This new biotech field is absolutely incredible," says Sasse. "I love my classes at GCC and my TGEN internship has been the icing on the cake." Sasse is supervised by Dr. Anna Joy who says, "Jeanne has had great training at GCC and is a superior intern. We'd actually like to clone her!"
Jamie Pruitt, of Peoria, is working at the Sun Health Research Institute's L.J. Roberts Center for Alzheimer's Research under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Grover. He is equally enthusiastic about his intern and says, "Jamie has worked out so well for us that we are talking to Dr. Tuohy at GCC about getting a second student intern and about other possible internship collaborations. "
Okate Bilante, of Glendale, interns at Barrow Neurological Institute researching brain cancers resistant to chemotherapy. He emigrated from the African nation of Togo and hopes to be a researcher someday. His supervisor, Neuro-Oncology Lab Director Dr. Adrienne Scheck, is confident he will achieve his goals. She says, "Okate is very smart and is working extremely hard. He now has his research protocol all worked out and is starting to get some data, which is exciting."
GCC Biotechnology Program Director Dr. JamesaTuohy is enthusiastic about the internship program and hopes to place more GCC interns in research labs next summer. For more information about GCC's Biotechnology Program or careers in this field, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/biology/gccbiotech or call Tuohy at 623.845.3845. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale.
