GCC North Invites Public Review of Plans for Growth, Aug. 3
An open community forum to review plans for new buildings and other major facilities upgrades at Glendale Community College North will be held on Wed., Aug. 3, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. It will be held in the North Valley Regional Library on the campus of Boulder Creek High School, 40410 N. Gavilan Peak Parkway, Anthem. In Nov. 2004, voters overwhelmingly approved $105 million in bond funding to support GCC's overall facilities needs. This forum will review how a portion of these funds will be used to help GCC North expand to meet the growing needs of its students. A satellite of the GCC campus, GCC North at 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road now operates at its capacity. GCC North opened in fall 2000, and has served more than 6,600 students since then. Enrollment for the current semester is 1,461. Planned expansion responds to projections indicating that GCC North must be able to support a 30% increase in its student population over the next ten years. GCC Prof. Teaches Communication Skills Through Improvisation
A new technique that helps families, co-workers and others improve communication will be showcased at a national conference when Glendale Community College Professor Kirt Shineman presents July 27 at "The Governor's 11th Annual National and Community Service Conference" at Northern Arizona University. Shineman's presentation is titled "Playback Theater and Social Activism with Community Learning." Playback Theater is an original form of improvisational performance. Through performance, this hot new technique teaches teens, family members or employees important skills such as conflict management, leadership, and overcoming communication apprehension. The conference provides a forum for issues of national and community service with the goal of providing professional development, service ethic, network opportunities, personal enrichment and team building. Shineman is a Communication Professor and Director of Forensics at GCC. His students have received many prestigious awards at national competitions. They also achieved international renown last year when the GCC Forensics Team captured first place in Madrid, Spain in the Community College Sweepstakes at the 15th Annual International Forensics Association Tournament.
