Jean Ann Abel Named GCC Interim President

Jean Ann Abel, a 21-year community college administrator, has been appointed interim president of Glendale Community College by Maricopa County Community College District Chancellor Dr. Rufus Glasper. Her appointment will begin Aug. 8 when current GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph retires. Abel is expected to serve in her new role for approximately six months while the search continues for a new, permanent GCC president. She will not be an applicant for the permanent position.

"Jean Ann Abel's wealth of knowledge and experience with GCC and MCCCD will prove incredibly helpful at this time of transition. She will provide strong leadership and help us make a smooth transition as Dr. Randolph retires and a new president comes on board," Glasper says.

Abel has worked for MCCCD since 1984, beginning as Manager of Employment for four years at the District Office. In 1988, she moved to GCC to hold a series of progressively responsible positions in academic leadership, starting as an Associate Dean. In 1989 she became Dean of Instruction for Business and Technology and later for Arts, Science and General Education as well. In January 2005 her title was changed to Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Prior to working for MCCCD, Abel worked in retail management in several positions, including personnel manager and employee trainer. She also taught high school for five years, first in the Phoenix Union High School District and then in the Tempe Unified High School District.

Abel completed her BA and MA degrees plus post-graduate work at Arizona State University. She is an active member and past president of both the Glendale Kachina Rotary and the Arizona Academic Administrators Association. She is also past president of the Arizona Occupational Administrators Council, and is a community volunteer for the Civitans supporting Special Olympics and group care homes.
