GCC Grooms Future Nurses in Pilot Summer Program
The Nursing Department at Glendale Community College (GCC) has piloted and completed a summer camp for high school juniors and seniors who have shown an interest in nursing. Partnering with the college were four sponsoring hospitals--Banner Thunderbird, Banner Estrella, Phoenix Baptist and Maryvale. The four-day immersion experience, Future Nurse Camp 2005, met at GCC June 6-June 9. Students spent the mornings at GCC, learning and practicing nursing skills such as CPR. They spent the afternoons at the four hospitals, shadowing nurses and observing them do their jobs. Each participating hospital also provided lunch to the students and a dinner with guest speaker at the end of the day. For more information about the nursing program at GCC, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/nursing or call 623.845.3200.
Dr. Phil Randolph Named President Emeritus of GCC
Retiring Glendale Community College President Phil Randolph recently became only the second president of GCC to receive President Emeritus Status when the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) Governing Board granted him that distinction. Former GCC President Dr. John Waltrip received it upon his retirement in 1996. The President Emeritus Distinction is only bestowed upon presidents who have at least 20 consecutive years of exemplary, full-time employment with MCCCD and who are recommended for the honor by the MCCCD Chancellor when they retire. The emeritus recommendation stated: "For 33 years Dr. Randolph has served the students and taxpayers of the Maricopa Community Colleges with distinction. His ethics and high standards, combined with humility and good humor, leave a special legacy in higher education in Arizona and with the Maricopa Community Colleges." Randolph is a Glendale native who spent his 33-year career with the Maricopa Community Colleges at several different locations. He began and ended his career at GCC, assuming its presidency in 2002.
GCC's International Ed Program Sends Students and Teachers Traveling
The International Education Program (IEP) at Glendale Community College (GCC) is funding foreign trips for both students and faculty members this summer. Students Ryan Walmsley and R. Spencer Steenblik each received $1,000 to study Spanish language and Mexican culture. Walmsley will study in Xalapa, Mexico, and Steenblik in Guanajuato, Mexico. Carmela Arnoldt of the GCC English Department and Catherine McNamara of the GCC Library will go to Salzburg, Austria, in July to join educators from around the world for an intense week of workshops, lectures and discussions. Topics to be discussed include: Understanding the Contemporary World, Viewing Issues from Global Perspectives, and Cultural Exchange: America and the World. For more information about the IEP at GCC, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/isp or call 623.845.3136.
