GCC Nurses Present Teen Maze at "Healthy Avondale"
More than 100 student nurses from Glendale Community College will present and staff a fun, educational health event for teenagers called "Teen Maze" at the city of Avondale's public health information day called "Healthy Avondale." "Healthy Avondale" will be held at Estrella Mountain Community College on Sat., Apr. 2, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Teen Maze is a literal maze of hands-on, interactive activities that teens work their way through, which includes wearing an empathy pregnancy belly, playing a life-size board game called Abstinence Monopoly where students are the board pieces, and trying to operate remote control cars while wearing "beer goggles" which simulate intoxication. The purpose of Teen Maze is to educate young people about the sexual activities, environmental threats, violence, dietary mistakes, tobacco/alcohol/drug abuse, physical inactivity and other risk behaviors that threaten their lives and health. They will learn about the normal biopsychosocial changes they are experiencing and how to manage them. Community members of all ages are invited to attend this free event. For more information about Healthy Avondale, call Molly DeLeon at 623.245.6763. For more information about the nursing program at GCC, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/nursing or call 623.845.3200.
