GCC's ACE-Plus Program Wins National Award
The ACE-Plus program at Glendale Community College (GCC) recently received an Exemplary Practice Award for 2005 from the National Council for Student Development (NCSD). ACE stands for "Achieving a College Education." It is a scholarship-based college preparation program designed to expose high school students to a college environment and course work, and teach them skills for success in college and personal life. The "Plus" stands for the many services, workshops and activities offered by the program in addition to the college classes. Most students in the program are the first in their families to attend college, are financially disadvantaged and are minority students.
The NCSD, an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges, awards only 12 Exemplary Practice Awards each year. Nominated programs come from all over the U.S. The NCSD selection panel's report to GCC stated that the ACE-Plus program showed merit in these areas: 1) program quality, 2) significance to the field, 3) evidence of effectiveness, and 4) ideas that can be transferred to other community colleges.
When congratulated on his program's award, ACE-Plus Director Dr. Ibrahim Naim said, "This award would never have been possible without the strong support the program receives from GCC's president, faculty and staff who promote and nurture the program, my excellent staff and terrific students."
An interesting fact is that of the 12 awards given, three went to Maricopa Community Colleges. In addition to GCC, Gateway and Scottsdale Community Colleges also received Exemplary Practice Awards for other programs.
NCSD is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Dr. Phil Randolph, president of GCC, will attend the AACC Convention, April 9-12, in Boston, Massachusetts and be presented with the Exemplary Practice Award for the GCC ACE-Plus Program.
