GCC Nursing Student Wins Banner Thunderbird Scholarship
Glendale Community College nursing student Sandra Dinwiddie was recently awarded a $6,000 scholarship by the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center Volunteers (BTMCV). It will cover her tuition, books and other school expenses during the two-year nursing program. Dinwiddie is the 13th GCC nursing student to be awarded a BTMCV scholarship since the scholarship program was started in 1993. The volunteers fund two GCC nursing scholarships each year and two scholarships for nursing students at the West campus of ASU. Kathy Lane, Director of the BTMCV, says, "These scholarships are a real win-win for Arizona and for our hospital, as well as for the students who receive them. Any new nurse helps ease the nursing shortage in Arizona, and several of the GCC nurses who have won our scholarships have worked at our hospital either during or after their nursing training, which helps us." GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. For more information about the highly respected GCC nursing program, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/nursing or call 623.845.3200.
Free Writing Workshop with Clive Matson at GCC, Feb. 11-12
"Let the Crazy Child Write" is the title of a free, two-day writing workshop to be held at Glendale Community College (GCC) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 11 and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 12. It will be held in room HU-106 on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Clive Matson, poet, playwright, short-story writer and essayist, comes to Glendale to share his most successful creative writing workshop, taught at over 1,000 locations. Matson says, "We are close to our creative source when our 'child within' speaks its mind—and ignores any critical or editorial voices." This workshop will show students how to bring their "crazy child" out. The class is for beginning, developing and experienced writers . The Glendale Arts Commission in conjunction with the Black Cat Poets, a GCC student organization, makes this free workshop possible. Please note that all writing and readings will be uncensored. Seating is limited! To assure seats, students MUST RSVP by calling 602.942.3060 or 623.845.3538.
Students from 36 Countries Enrich International Program at GCC
Glendale Community College welcomed 25 new international students this semester, bringing the number of foreign students in the International Education Program to 108. Ken Bus, Director of the program, says, "The GCC program is growing and continues to attract students from a very broad spectrum of countries." One very interesting scenario involves 23-year-old GCC student Therese Helmersson from Sweden. Prior to coming to Arizona, she was studying in Sweden to become an English teacher. She decided to spend a semester attending college in the U.S. in order to further improve her already-excellent English. Interestingly, she is living with a retired teacher, Janet Proulx, whose sister was an exchange student to Sweden living with Helmersson's grandmother more than 36 years ago. Helmersson recently received a phone call from her boyfriend in Sweden, asking if he could fly here in April to propose to her at the Grand Canyon. The answer was yes! For information about GCC's International Education Program, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/isp or call Bus at 623.845.3136.
