Investing, Astrology, Song Writing, Painting and more at GCC
The Glendale Community College Spring Schedule of community classes is now available, with 100 fascinating special interest, non-credit classes. Ten categories of classes (Arts and Crafts, New Age, Business and Investing, Children and Teens, etc.) include such titles as Mutual Fund Basics, Bead Jewelry Making, Emotional Freedom, Bluegrass Banjo, Fly Tying and Shabby Chic Style. There is literally something for everyone in the family-including Retirement Planning for Grandpa and Dog Obedience for Rover. There is even a class for moms or dads to learn how to teach simple sign language to babies. Feng Shui for the home and Xeriscape Desert Landscaping for the yard are extremely popular, and the section of New Age/Paranormal classes has become the most popular category in the last few years. Come explore self-hypnosis, your clairvoyant abilities, or how to connect with your angels. Schedules may also be found at both Glendale libraries, the Peoria library and the Phoenix branch library (Cholla) at Metrocenter. Most classes are offered at the GCC main campus, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. A few are offered at GCC North, 5727 W. Happy Valley Road, also in Glendale.
"College Goal Sunday" Financial Aid Assistance at GCC, Jan. 30
To help students and their families overcome financial barriers to education, GCC will join 23 sites statewide in hosting "College Goal Sunday" (CGS) Sun., Jan. 30. The presentation will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will last approximately two hours. This event provides free information to the families of any college-bound Arizona students who need help applying for financial aid. Financial-aid professionals will give line-by-line assistance to students completing the universally required Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Students 23 or younger should bring their parents and parents' 2004 income data. (W-2's or a pay stub and/or 2004 tax return). Students 24 and older should bring their own 2004 income information. One participant per site will be selected to receive a $150 CGS Site Scholarship. Scholarship winners are also eligible to win one of two grand-prize $500 scholarships. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale; the event will be held in the Student Union building on the south side of the campus. College Goal Sunday is sponsored by corporate sponsors and the Arizona Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. GCC Prof. to Speak on Multiple Intelligences
Dr. René Díaz-Lefebvre of the Glendale Community College Psychology Department will present "Recognizing and Nurturing Your Child's Multiple Intelligences" in the upcoming "Visiting Professor" lecture at 7 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 26, in the Auditorium of the Glendale Public Library, 5959 W. Brown St. Based on 20 years of research, beginning with Harvard cognitive psychologist Dr. Howard Gardner's landmark studies, these methods transcend traditional "paper and pencil learning." The author of several books and articles and a practitioner of MI principles for over a decade, Díaz-Lefebvre will discuss practical ways to help children ages six and older reach their fullest learning potential. Two Free MLK Events at GCC, Jan. 19 and 20
Glendale Community College has scheduled events to commemorate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Wed., Jan. 19, a film, "King," starring Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson, will be shown in the Student Union Lounge at 11:00 a.m. Also in the Student Union Lounge at 11:30 a.m. on Thurs., Jan. 20, a presentation will include an audiotape of King's "I Have a Dream" speech accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation of scenes from King's life and work. Following the PowerPoint presentation, Professor Clay Dix will speak on "The Impact and Legacy of the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr." Dix is professor emeritus, ASU West, and Program Director of New Choices, an educational consulting firm. Dix will take questions from the audience following his presentation. Attendees may bring their lunch if they would like to eat during either program.
