Glendale Community College Spring Registration Going Strong
Glendale Community College offers thousands of sections of classes for the spring semester at three Glendale sites. The main campus is at 6000 W. Olive Avenue, GCC North is at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road and the University-College Center is on the ASU West Campus at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road. GCC Main has the largest selection, but classes can be taken at all three locations. Credit classes include occupational subjects like automotives, EMT, fire science, nursing, telecommunications, sewing and upholstery, welding, computers (also taught in Spanish) and much more. They also include traditional university-transfer subjects such as biology, foreign language, math, philosophy, history, art and sociology. Mature students should explore the Academy of Lifelong Learning that offers peer-group classes for older adults. Credit classes start January 18; call 623.845.3314 to request a credit schedule. GCC Main's enrollment center is open for registration Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will also be open two Saturdays—Jan. 15 and 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Campus will be closed for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 17.) GCC to Hold Free "Brown Bag" Event for MLK Commemoration, Jan. 20
Glendale Community College has scheduled a free public event for Thursday, Jan. 20, to commemorate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To be held in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 11:30 a.m., the educational event will include an audiotape of King's "I Have a Dream" speech accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation of scenes from King's life and work. Following the PowerPoint presentation, Dr. Clay Dix will speak on "The Impact and Legacy of the Life of Martin Luther King, Jr." Dix is professor emeritus, ASU West and Program Director of New Choices, an educational consulting firm. Dix will take questions from the audience following his presentation. Attendees may bring their lunch if they would like to eat during the program. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale.
GCC Biotechnology Program Grows; Classes Of Interest to Public
Responding to the Valley's growing Biotech industry, Glendale Community College has developed a Biotechnology Program that adds new classes every semester. New this semester is a class that will be of interest to many besides students actively pursuing a career in the exciting and expanding biotechnology field. BIO211AE is "Business and Regulatory Affairs in Biotechnology" but could be called "Better living through Biochemistry." Instructor and Biotech Program Director Dr. James Tuohy has arranged for several prominent guest lecturers from valley research and industry—including Dr. Joseph Rogers, President and Senior Scientist at Sun Health Research Institute. The one-credit class meets once a week for 16 weeks; some of the weekly topics of general public interest will include Evolution of the FDA, the Thalidomide Case Study, Drug Discoveries, Estrogen Replacement Case Study, Generic versus Branded Drugs, Natural Supplements, and Setting up a Biotech Company. The class meets in room LS-143 on the GCC campus, 6000 W. Olive Avenue, from 2:00 to 2:50 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning January 19. The course fee for Maricopa County residents is $60.
