GCC Prof. Appointed to National Board
Psychology professor Dr. Ladonna Lewis of Glendale Community College was recently elected to serve on the Psychology Teachers @ Community Colleges (PT@CC) Executive Committee. PT@CC is an affiliate membership group of the American Psychological Association. The executive committee works on many projects, including: improving high school minority recruiting for psychology, matching community college psychology students with professors for mentoring, creating a bridge between high school and college psychology learning outcomes and organizing PT@CC teaching-related programming at regional and national conventions.
Performing Arts Prof. at GCC Second in State to Earn National Board Certification
Glendale Community College cinema professor David Seitz recently achieved National Board Certification in Career and Technical Education in the category of Arts and Communication from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). He is only the second teacher in the state of Arizona to receive such certification in this category. Founded in 1987 with a broad base of support from governors, teacher unions and school board leaders, school administrators, college and university officials, business executives, foundations and concerned citizens, NBPTS is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization governed by a 63-member board of directors, the majority of whom are teachers. Committed to basic reform in education, NBPTS recognizes that teaching is at the heart of education and, further, that the single most important action the nation can take to improve schools is to strengthen teaching. Achieving this certification involved a ten-week pre-candidacy course, numerous additional classes, writings, videos of Seitz's teaching, written work samples, a thesis and exams.
ALL Reception Jan. 13 Makes College Registration Easy for Mature Learners
Mature learners of the West Valley are invited to an exciting event at Glendale Community College on Jan. 13, 2005. From 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., GCC will host an Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) free reception. It will be held in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. The ALL program offers a variety of classes, credit and noncredit, for adult learners to enjoy educational experiences with their peers in relaxed, informal settings. Classes are offered in many areas, including personal computers, child and family studies, fashion and sewing, fitness and wellness, and hobby areas. The reception will feature information about classes, easy registration and refreshments. According to ALL Coordinator Sheryl Benavides, "This reception is a fun and easy way for mature learners to learn about classes designed just for them. And the presence of enrollment personnel at the reception means students will be walked through the registration process with no hassles." Call 623.845.9477 or 623.845.3229 for more information.
