Readfest Brings Thousands of Young Students to GCC Campus
A crowd of 6,000 enjoyed the 9th Annual Readfest at Glendale Community College on Nov. 10. More than 5,000 of those were elementary school children; the rest were teachers and community members with pre-school children. Thirty-two West Valley schools sent students who played word games and participated in other reading-related activities in booths set up all over the central campus mall. Children also listened to stories read continuously throughout the day by community and campus volunteers. A dozen brilliantly costumed storybook characters strolled the grounds, talking to the children and giving out "autographs." These included Snow White, Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, The Cat in the Hat and Little Bo Peep to name a few. Every child who attended was given a free book to take home. It required 300 GCC employee-volunteers and more than 50 community volunteers to staff the mammoth event which supports and promotes reading to schoolchildren. Major financial co-sponsors of the event included Arizona Public Service, the GCC Faculty Senate and GCC English professor Charlotte Howey. Other donors included the Glendale Kiwanis Club, Arrowhead Community Bank, State Farm Insurance and DRW Engineering, Inc.
