GCC Math Prof. Named Fellow of Project ACCESS
Laura Watkins, of the GCC Mathematics Department, was recently named a Fellow of Project ACCESS (Advancing Community College Careers: Education, Scholarship and Service) by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). She was one of only 28 faculty from around the nation so named. Project ACCESS is a professional development and mentoring program that focuses on the needs of new two-year college faculty to support improvements in the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics. Fellows participate in a number of activities and national conferences at which they will gain a richer understanding of the culture and mission of the two-year college and its students, and become familiar with issues related to the scholarship of teaching. Watkins will attend the first of several AMATYC national meetings in Orlando, Nov. 18-21.
Holiday Dance Program at GCC, Dec. 3-4
Start your December festivities with a visit to Glendale Community College's holiday dance program. "A Purely Human State," directed by GCC Dance Director Lenna DeMarco, will be performed in the GCC Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 3 and Sat., Dec. 4. This eclectic group of modern dance pieces will be performed by GCC's student dance company, "Physical Graffiti," and will feature Claudio Ribeiro, a Brazilian dancer who is currently studying at GCC. The company will perform works choreographed by two winners of the 2004 Arizona Choreography Competition: Brad Garner who now teaches dance at GCC, and Andrea Chesley, a GCC dance alumna currently continuing her dance studies at ASU. Tickets for performances, which may be purchased at the door, are $7 general admission and $5 for seniors and all students with current school ID. For more information, call 623.845.3796.
Free Abstract Painting Exhibit at GCC through Dec. 1
A stunning free exhibit of paintings by Myrna Harrison is on display through December 1 in the Student Union Lounge of Glendale Community College. These expressionist, color-saturated paintings of the desert, canyons and mountains evoke the violent, fierce landscape of the southwest. Her exhibit combines watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, ink and pastel pieces that present a personal view of the American landscape. Vibrant color and freely brushed images create an uncluttered look at the magnificence of nature. Myrna Harrison studied from 1953-57 in New York City with the American master of impressionism and pointillism, Hans Hoffman. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale.
