Glendale Community College Offers Hiring Opportunities to Community
The Career Services Department at Glendale Community College works diligently to expand employer relations with GCC and bring varied employment opportunities to both the campus and the community. Numerous employers now come to GCC year-round for specified days of interviewing and hiring. Disney, FedEx, Mervyn's, Chick-fil-A, Pearson Government Solutions, Phoenix Police Department, Securitas Security, Anderson Security, the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army have all interviewed and hired from the GCC campus. Employers distributing information can usually be found Monday through Thursday in the Student Union hallway or the breezeway in front of the Counseling and Career Services building (CCS). Employers are also given space in the CCS building to take applications and conduct initial screening interviews. For people who wish to explore a particular career opportunity, there is a credit class available called "Career Work Experience" that places students in a semester-long (generally unpaid) part-time internship arranged for them by the instructor. All of these services are open to the general public as well as to GCC students. For information on the list of hiring companies and their dates at GCC, visit the Career Services website at www.gc.maricopa.edu/career or call 623.845.3286. For information on the Career Work Experience class, reach Diane Taylor at

GCC Prof. Receives Educator of the Year Award from ACA

He was praised by his nominator, Dr. Dayle Hardy-Short, speech professor at NAU, for being "an unwavering advocate for the Speech Communication discipline and its value both to students and to our civic life in Arizona. He is constantly seeking ways to help students improve their skills by developing, offering and requiring more communication courses for students." Reed has taught at GCC since 1986.
GCC Hosts Annual "Empty Bowls" Fundraiser Luncheon, Nov. 17
On Wed., Nov. 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Glendale Community College (GCC) students and the GCC Office of Student Life will again sponsor its popular "Empty Bowls" fund-raising soup luncheon. The event, to be held in the GCC Student Union cafeteria, 6000 W. Olive Ave., in Glendale, will raise money and awareness about hunger during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, November 14-20, 2004. Hunger awareness activism is a hallmark of GCC students. Last year "Empty Bowls" raised more than $2,000 for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. This year the money raised will go to the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Marjon Ceramics of Phoenix donates the clay, GCC art students create and donate ceramic bowls, GCC Art Professor Harry Kaino glazes and fires them, and Aramark Corporation donates the soup. Participants purchase bowls, priced at $5 and up, and have them filled with soup. Other ceramic objects will also be for sale at this event. For more information, call 623.845.3567.
