"Readfest" & Annual Used Book Sale Will Bring Thousands to GCC Campus
Thousands of K-4th grade children will be brought to the central mall of Glendale Community College (GCC) for the ninth-annual GCC Readfest extravaganza on Wed., Nov. 10. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., they will enjoy activities that reveal the adventure and excitement of reading and emphasize its importance. Read-aloud booths, displays and other activities will be offered, and professionally costumed "storybook" characters will wander the campus interacting with the children. The cast of characters will include the Cat in the Hat, the Queen of Hearts, Merlin, Snow White, Grumpy, Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Little Bo Peep, the Little Mermaid, Minnie Mouse, Cinderella, Dorothy & Toto, too! The community is invited to support this literacy-based program for children by shopping the used book sale that will also be held in the GCC Mall at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The book sale will be held Tues., Nov. 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Wed., Nov. 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be more books than ever to choose from this year--literally thousands of fiction, non-fiction, and children's books, both hardback and softback. Small donations are all that are asked for each book. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. Plenty of free parking is available in the north GCC parking lot, easily accessible from the 59th and Vogel campus entrance. For more information, call 623.845.3810.
"Rocket City" Premiere's Nov. 4 at Glendale Community College
The Glendale Community College (GCC) Performing Arts Department proudly presents the premiere of "Rocket City: The American Dream…Interrupted!" a musical drama written by local playwright/composer Jackie Marx. This timely story of service to country follows Fletcher T. Bailey, the spirit of a World War I doughboy as he watches over his grandson, Private First Class Christopher Bailey who is in Pleiku, South Vietnam in 1967. The student cast has had the wonderful opportunity to work with the playwright to create new dialogue and to further develop the relationships among the characters of the play. Performances will be held in the GCC Performing Arts Center on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. Shows are Nov. 4, 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. and Nov. 7 and 14 at 2:00 p.m. General admission is $10, seniors $7, students with valid school ID are $6. GCC Professor Wins Arizona Justice Educator of the Year
Professor Duke Schafer, long-time Administration of Justice faculty at Glendale Community College (GCC), has been named Arizona Justice Educator of the Year by the Arizona Justice Educator's Association (AJEA). They cite his "many years of dedicated service to law enforcement, justice education and AJEA participation which warrant this well-deserved award." Schafer received the award at the October AJEA Conference recently held in Tucson. AJEA members are law enforcement instructors from high schools, community colleges and universities.
