GCC Offers New Certificates for Linux Operating System
Anyone interested in a competitive career in information technology (IT) should know that, new this year, Glendale Community College (GCC) has introduced four Certificates of Completion in Linux Operating System. All the certificates are designed to prepare students for a variety of industry-recognized exams, and include classes in Linux operating system basics, system administration, network administration and network security. The classes will ensure a student's knowledge and skill level for a variety of industry certifications. The GCC Linux Professional Certificate requires 12 credits, the GCC Linux Associate Certificate requires 24 credits and the GCC Linux Networking Administration Certificate is offered at two levels--one that requires 36 credits and one that requires 61 credits. Linux is one brand of the burgeoning UNIX technology revolutionizing IT today. It utilizes free "open source code," giving users and programmers freedom to customize the operating system and create new programs and software. GCC to Host Free Regional Science Strategies Workshop for College Science Teachers Oct. 30
College science teachers in and near Phoenix are invited to learn about the newest teaching strategies and resources by registering for the FREE "Strategies for Success" Science Workshop to be held on Sat., Oct. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Glendale Community College, 6000 W. Olive Ave., Glendale. Sponsored by Benjamin Cummings Publishers, the workshop will offer interactive training sessions on the latest educational technology as well as breakout sessions on topics such as Strategies for Increasing Active Learning in the Classroom, Hands-On Biology Labs Online, Creating Engaging Chemistry Posters and Developing the Biotechnology Workforce. GCC's Biology Chair, Dr. Steve Williams, will present a breakout session titled "Active Learning in Teaching Anatomy and Physiology." Other presenters include faculty from UCLA, Georgia Southern University, University of Connecticut and Ventura College. "No Child Left Behind" State Roundtable to be Held at Glendale Community College Oct. 21
Arizona Educators will gather at Glendale Community College for the semi-annual "No Child Left Behind: Arizona Reads Roundtable" on Thurs., Oct. 21, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the GCC Student Union Lounge. Sponsored by the ACE-Plus program at GCC, the event will feature keynote speaker Margaret Garcia Dugan, Associate Superintendent for Academic Achievement, Arizona Department of Education. Attending from the U.S. Department of Education will be Martha Wilson, Special Assistant for Regional Services. The GCC ACE-Plus program will be highlighted at the Roundtable. ACE stands for "Achieving a College Education." It is a scholarship-based college preparation program that exposes high school students to a college environment and course work, and teaches them skills for success in college and personal life. The "Plus" stands for the many services, workshops and activities offered by the program in addition to the college classes. Other topics on the Roundtable agenda will include Drop-Out Prevention Programs and Statewide Literacy Efforts, and Service Learning/Community Engagement. Annual Chemistry Day Fun at GCC Oct. 22
The community is invited to join elementary school visitors and enjoy a free celebration of National Chemistry Week at Glendale Community College (GCC) on Fri., Oct. 22. The Chemistry Department will put on a 45-minute Chemistry Demonstration Show at 9:00 a.m., to be repeated at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The shows will be held outside at the east end of the Physical Science (PS) Building which is on the north side of the campus. Plenty of free parking is available north of the PS building. Demonstrations will include "genie in a bottle," an ammonia fountain, elephant toothpaste, and fun with liquid nitrogen. Glendale Community College is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale.
