GCC Fire Academy Students Co-Sponsor Golf Tournament to Raise Scholarship Money
The Fall 2004 GCC Fire Academy Cadets are partnering with two medical foundations to co-sponsor a fund-raising golf tournament which will benefit all three organizations. The "Benefit and Charity Golf Tournament" will be held at the Coldwater Golf Club, 100 N. Clubhouse Drive, in Avondale. A shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 17, will begin the tournament; a putting contest will be held earlier at 11:30 a.m. The price is $50 per player (checks payable to The Red Shirt Fund) and includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch and a t-shirt. The format is a four-man best ball scramble. There will also be a silent auction, raffles, contests for longest drive, longest putt, etc. and hole-in-one prizes. Beneficiaries of the proceeds will be: the GCC Future Firefighters Scholarship Fund; the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation benefiting Avery Ruiz, son of a Tempe Fire Captain/Paramedic; and The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation benefiting Garrett Wheeler, nephew of a Glendale Community College Fire Academy cadet. GCC Prof. Donates Award to Student Scholarship Fund
Glendale Community College Psychology Professor Dr. René Díaz-Lefebvre received the 2004 Distinguished Faculty Award from the Arizona Association of Chicanos for Higher Education (AACHE). The award included a $1,000 gift, which he has chosen to donate to fund four $250 GCC student scholarships. The GCC chapter of AACHE will select and award students based on the following criteria: recipients must be full-time GCC students majoring in Psychology (or a related discipline in social sciences or education), with at least a 3.0 grade point average and 36 or more credit hours accumulated. Preference will be given to students of Hispanic descent. GCC AACHE will explore the possibility of continuing the scholarship beyond this year.
Sebastiao Pereira To Exhibit Watercolors
Nationally-known artist Sebastiao Pereira will exhibit a collection of his watercolor paintings at Glendale Community College from Mon., Oct. 18, through Wed., Nov. 3. It will be held in the Student Union Lounge on the GCC campus, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale; the exhibit can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Originally from Brazil, Pereira now lives in Phoenix and teaches art at South Mountain High School. He maintains a full professional exhibition schedule and has collected many honors for his artwork. He was a featured artist in "International Artists" magazine, which featured his watercolors and his working techniques. Pereira works in a photorealist style. His works are large, precise, vividly and intensely colorful, and often feature still life materials. He uses fractals, based upon mathematical concepts, to do his compositions--many of which are based upon plant shapes. He is interested in patterns, colors and design; his work is exhibited locally and nationally. For more information, call the GCC art department at 623.845.3757.
