GCC Prof. to Give Free Lecture on Journey to the Amazon, Sept. 22
"Heart of Darkness: A Trip into the Amazon River Basin" is the title of a free lecture to be given by Dr. Linda Smith, professor of anthropology at Glendale Community College (GCC). Travel with Smith, other GCC faculty and students as they search for wildlife of all types in the Amazon Basin of Ecuador. Follow their adventures through white water and black water, through mud, bugs and thick jungle. Enjoy many photos of the local inhabitants, from frogs to people, that were taken during 2003 and 2004 summer field trips along the Napo and Tiputini tributaries of the Amazon. The lecture will be held on Wed., Sept. 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the east (education) wing of the Glendale Public Library, located at 5959 W. Brown in Glendale.
Free Résumé Writing Seminars at GCC
Glendale Community College (GCC) will host four résumé writing seminars that are free and open to the public. Two will be held on Sept. 21, from 2:45-3:45 p.m., and 6:00-7:00 p.m. Another will be held on Mon., Oct. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and the final seminar will be held on Tues., Oct. 26, from 11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. All seminars will be held in the Counseling and Career Services Building (CCS) on the GCC campus, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The seminars will cover important and basic résumé writing techniques and attendees will receive personalized assistance and suggestions for improving their résumés. Free Depression Screening at GCC, Oct. 7
In any given year, approximately 19 million Americans, almost 10% of the population, suffer from a depressive illness. In conjunction with National Depression Screening Day, the Counseling Department at Glendale Community College (GCC) will offer free depression screening from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 7. Screening will be held in the Counseling and Career Services Building (CCS) on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Walk-ins are welcome; no appointment is necessary. This real medical illness can strike anyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, race, gender, or socioeconomic status. Many symptoms can signal depression, including daily depressed or irritable moods, loss of pleasure in normal activities, sudden weight or appetite changes, inability to sleep or excessive sleeping, agitation, constant fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide. According to Susan High, Chair of the GCC Counseling Department, "with diagnosis and proper treatment for depression, four out of five people will improve." For more information, call 623.845.3064.
