Visit of Mexican Consul General Kicks off Hispanic Heritage Events at GCC

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), Glendale Community College (GCC) will offer a number of special events. All events are free and open to the public; all will be held on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The kick-off event occurred on Thurs., Sept. 16, when the new Mexican Consul General of Phoenix, Carlos Flores-Vizcarra, visited GCC. He attended the September luncheon and meeting of the GCC and Community Chapter of the Arizona Association of Hispanics for Higher Education (AACHE).

On Wed., Sept. 22, the Associated Student Government at GCC will host an informal free fiesta with music and Mexican food. It will be held in the GCC Student Union from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Also on Sept. 22, famed Argentine 10-string guitarist Nestor Benito will perform a free concert at GCC at 7:30 p.m. in Music Building 2, room 151. He is one of a very few classical guitarists in the world who play the 10-string guitar, which is larger than a regular acoustic guitar and produces a richer sound. For more information on this event, call 623.845.3136.

Acclaimed California independent film-maker John Carlos Frey will make two presentations on Wed., Sept. 29 in the GCC Student Union Lounge. The first will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the other from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both presentations will include the showing of and discussion of his recent film, The Gatekeeper, which chronicles the plight of illegal Mexican immigrants attempting to make new lives in the United States. Born in Mexico but raised in San Diego, Frey was initially unattached to his Mexican heritage. That changed over time, and making this film was his tribute to his Mexican roots and to the pride he developed in his Hispanic heritage. The film has won multiple awards including "Best Film" and "Audience Choice" in six different film festivals. Mr. Frey has been an invited speaker at Harvard, Georgetown, Berkeley and many other Universities. Bruce Springsteen donated the music for the film.

On Wed., Oct. 6, a free film documentary titled "Mixed Feelings" will be shown from noon-1:00 p.m. in the GCC High Tech Center 1 Teleconference Room. This film will focus on social issues along the border of the U.S. and Mexico--specifically on the comparison and contrast of two border cities, one American and one Mexican.

GCC Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs José Mendoza will present a lecture on Thurs., Oct. 7, titled "Sights, Sounds, and History of Pancho Villa and the Mexican Revolution." He will present an historical perspective of Pancho Villa that differs from the Americanized version. He will also share his collection of images from this era. The presentation will be interwoven with music of the era performed and discussed by GCC student and mariachi musician Salvador Ojeda. This free presentation will take place from noon-1:30 p.m. in the GCC Student Union Lounge.

Finally, on Tues., Oct. 12, former college professor Humberto Garza will give two free presentations in the GCC Student Union Lounge about his book, Joaquin Murrieta: A Quest for Justice. Joaquin Murrieta was a Mexican immigrant who traveled to California in 1849. He and his family sustained numerous egregious atrocities at the hands of white Californians. At that point Murrieta set out on a lifetime rampage of revenge. Garza's first lecture will be from noon-1:30 p.m.; his second will be from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

The public is invited to all these free events.
