GCC Art Student Wins National Contest
Annually since 1998, the National Organization for Women (NOW) sponsors "Love Your Body Day" and holds a contest for design of the event's official poster. This year, from more than 2,500 poster entries, an abstract poster designed by Glendale Community College student Crystal Holiday won. Her poster will be featured in all promotions of Love Your Body Day, to be held on October 20. Holiday, majoring in graphic design, fine arts and multimedia web design at GCC, also won a $1,000 grand prize. "Love Your Body Day" was started by NOW to fight back against the negative images of women created by Hollywood and the advertising, fashion, cosmetics, diet, alcohol and tobacco industries. Women and girls spend billions of dollars every year on diets and cosmetic surgery, trying to reshape their bodies into an impossible "ideal." On "Love Your Body Day," people are encouraged to appreciate the uniqueness of their bodies and to resist the media's objectification of all bodies--women's bodies in particular.
