GCC Has Much to Offer Small Businesses
Healthy small businesses are a huge part of the economic backbone of the U.S., accounting for half of the private workforce and half of the nonfarm private gross domestic product. Glendale Community College (GCC) is committed to assisting entrepreneurs and small businesses, offering classes and programs designed just for them. The Small Business Entrepreneurship program includes 17 classes, ranging from .5 to 3 credits each, that help students acquire the skills, tools and knowledge necessary for successful start-up and operation of a profit-making business. These classes include Owning and Operating a Small Business, The Business Plan and Business Start-Up, Small Business Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation, Financing and Cash Management for a Small Business, Internet Marketing for Small Business and more. GCC also offers an 11-credit Small Business Entrepreneurship Certificate designed to build a foundation of start-up strategies and practices that will enable business owners to prosper in the ever-changing small business environment. The Maricopa Community Colleges also provide two Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) with a staff of business professionals that give free, expert advice to small business owners and others interested in starting small businesses. There are SBDC offices in Phoenix and Tempe. Visit www.dist.maricopa.edu/mccdsbdc for information, or call 480.784.0590 to schedule a free, one-on-one, confidential appointment.
International Student Program Growing at GCC
Nineteen-year-old Tomoyuki ("Tomo") Ogata has come almost 6,000 miles from Japan to attend Glendale Community College (GCC). He speaks Japanese and English well, is studying Spanish, and wants to be a translator someday. He is one of 118 students from 21 countries in the International Student Program (ISP) at GCC. September marks the 10th anniversary of this program, and Director Ken Bus is pleased with these numbers. He says, "This fall, thanks to the largest intake of new international students (45) we have experienced since the 9/11 tragedy, the downward international enrollment trend has reversed." The ISP at GCC is highly regarded in Japan. Ogata's guidance counselor traveled the U.S. scouting colleges and universities he thought would serve Japanese students well, and highly recommended GCC to Ogata. Japan and Korea have the largest representation of international students at GCC; Canada, Colombia and Kenya are also well represented. There is even one student from Burkina Faso (a small west African country north of Ghana). For more information on GCC's international student program, contact Bus at

World Renowned Classical Guitarist to Give Free Performance at GCC, Sept. 22
World-famous Argentinean Nestor Benito is one of very few classical guitarists in the world who play the 10-string guitar, and he is coming to Glendale Community College (GCC). Made possible by a grant from Arizona State University and co-sponsored by GCC's Music Department and International Education Program, the free concert will be held on Wed., Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. It will be in Music Building 2 (MU2), room 151, on the GCC main campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The 10-string guitar, invented in the early 1800s, is larger than a regular acoustic guitar, with a wider neck and extra bass strings. This instrument gives Benito's music a richer sound and allows him to play more challenging musical compositions. He has performed in many countries, including the U.S., Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras and more. For more information, call 623.845.3136.
