GCC Responds to Shortage and Expands Teacher Education Program
Glendale Community College is addressing the fact that Arizona loses 4,500 to 5,500 teachers each year and will need more than 100,000 new teachers in the next 10 years. This is a major workforce opportunity for people of all ages. GCC has expanded its teacher education program with additional faculty and new associate degree plans. It has a unique partnership with the College of Education at ASU West whose advisors visit GCC weekly to assist students plan courses of study that easily transfer to ASUW. New at GCC in the last year is a two-year Associate of Arts in Elementary Education (AAEE) degree to train paraprofessionals such as teacher aides. It was developed in response to the national No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which mandates that all classroom paraprofessionals in schools receiving Title I funds must now have a two-year degree or pass a special test. All credits from the AAEE degree also transfer to Arizona's public universities towards bachelor's degrees. For information about GCC teacher education, visit the web site at www.gc.maricopa.edu/socsci/ed/ or contact Nancy Oreshack at

Summer Tech Camp Inspires High School Students at GCC
Forty-five West Valley high school juniors and seniors recently completed an exciting three-day Tech Camp at Glendale Community College. For the sixth year, students with an interest in technology attended camp for free to study robotics, rocketry and electronics, and to perform hands-on, high-tech lab experiments and projects. This year's camp held an additional bonus--for the first time students could earn 1.5 college credits. In addition to on-campus activities, the students took field trips to electronics and engineering firms. They built motorized robots and programmed them to perform maneuvers and specific routines. Sophisticated rockets were also designed, built and launched on campus. A major portion of the funding for GCC Tech Camp was provided by the Western Maricopa Tech Prep Consortium. For information about next summer's camp, contact Director Manny Griego at
