His winning paper is titled "Relationship Between Religious Belief and Physical Health Among College Students." Baker's research mentor is GCC psychology faculty Dr. Sue Oliver.
Education Partnership Fills Many Northwest Valley Workforce Needs
An exceptional educational partnership in the northwest valley prepares students to fill workforce needs. Glendale Community College North campus (GCCN), at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road, is also the home of the Northwest Education Center (NEC). The NEC is a unique high school for juniors and seniors from Deer Valley Unified School district who take high tech classes for careers in computing, nursing, drafting, automotives and more. Having their high school on the campus of GCCN enables them to co-enroll or, after graduation, to move directly into the college classes they will need for many careers. Alana Bowen, who recently passed the state board exam for Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), is a perfect example of this partnered career path. She attended the NEC concentrating on nursing classes. Conveniently, she was able to co-enroll in college classes at GCCN on the same campus. Currently, she is taking pre-requisites for the Registered Nurse (RN) Program at GCC Main campus, and hopes ultimately to be accepted into the GCC RN program. According to Bowen, "My experience at NEC/GCCN was truly the best thing that has ever happened to me. The teachers were the best---they really take a deep personal interest in students. I also love GCC Main campus and my new goal is to earn my RN."
A.L.L. Reception Makes College Registration Easy for Mature Learners
Mature learners of the west valley are invited to an exciting event at Glendale Community College on August 18. From 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., GCC will host an Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) free reception. It will be held in the GCC Student Union Lounge at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale. The ALL program offers a variety of classes, credit and noncredit, for adult learners to enjoy educational experiences with their peers in relaxed, informal settings. Classes are offered in many areas, including personal computers, child and family studies, fashion and sewing, fitness and wellness, and hobby areas. The reception will feature information about classes, easy registration, door prizes and refreshments. According to ALL Coordinator Sheryl Benavides, "This reception is a fun and easy way for mature learners to learn about classes designed just for them. And the presence of enrollment personnel means students will be walked through the registration process with no hassles."
