GCC Fall Registration Going Strong at 3 Locations
Glendale Community College has more than 4,000 sections of classes, both credit and noncredit, offered for the fall semester. Classes are offered at three Glendale sites for your convenience. The main campus is at 6000 W. Olive Avenue, GCC North is at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road and the University-College Center is on the ASU West Campus at 4701 W. Thunderbird Road. GCC Main has the largest selection, but classes can be taken at all three locations. Credit classes include occupational subjects like automotives, EMT, fire science, nursing, telecommunications, sewing and upholstery, welding, computers (also taught in Spanish) and much more. They also include traditional transfer subjects such as biology, foreign language, math, philosophy, history, art and sociology. Mature students should explore the Academy of Lifelong Learning which offers slower-paced classes for older adults. There is literally something for every member of the family! Non-credit, special interest classes include a world of fun and unusual things such as bluegrass banjo, antiques and collectibles, investing, meditation, feng shui, cooking, jewelry making and more. Credit classes start August 21; call 623.845.3314 to request a credit schedule. Non-credit classes start September 7; call 623.845.3805 to request a non-credit schedule. GCC's enrollment center is open for registration from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Campus will be closed on Friday, August 6.) To register by phone, call 623.845.3333.
First Student-Initiated Scholarship Funded at GCC
The first student-initiated and student-funded scholarship at Glendale Community College is now a reality. In April, 2004, the GCC Fire Academy students approaching graduation took up a collection and did fund-raising projects to fund a scholarship for a student in next year's Fire Academy class. Their hope is that subsequent graduating classes will each year donate a like amount and keep the scholarship going. The "Future Firefighters Scholarship" is now an official GCC scholarship. Others interested in donating to GCC should contact Frances Mateo at 623.845.3379.
GCC Biology Prof. Publishes Microbiology Text
A college textbook, Alcamo's Fundamentals of Microbiology, has been published by Glendale Community College biology professor Dr. Jeffrey Pommerville after a year's sabbatical to significantly revise and update it. His seventh edition of this widely acclaimed and widely used microbiology text is aimed at allied health and pre-nursing students at the community college and university levels. It is also suitable for other non-majors microbiology courses. According to his publishers, Jones and Bartlett Publisher of Boston, "it will be the number one or number two selling text in its market." Pommerville is also an expert in the field of bioterrorism and gives many public addresses annually on that subject in addition to teaching at GCC. Pommerville can be reached at
jeffrey.pommerville@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3910. Information about the book can be found at
http://www.amazon.com and other internet book sites.
