Water Safety Day 2003 at GCC Wins Copper Anvil Award

Glendale Community College (GCC) was the site of the 2003 Water Safety Day event that recently won Phoenix Children's Hospital and Laurie Schmidt a Copper Anvil Award in the non-profit category from the Phoenix Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Copper Anvils are awarded for outstanding Public Relations work done by member firms or groups. A year in the planning and widely promoted, Water Safety Day 2003 was a joint product of Phoenix Children's Hospital "Water Watchers" group and many other Maricopa agencies that strongly promote water safety. Thousands of children and their parents attended the event at GCC in 2003, learning about water safety from many booths and displays, viewing fire trucks, helicopters and other emergency vehicles, participating in fun and educational activities, and interacting with many water safety officials.

GCC's Dr. Gilbert Cruz Co-Authors Arizona Research Guide

Dr. Gilbert Cruz, history professor at Glendale Community College (GCC), recently saw the publication of an Arizona research materials guidebook that he co-authored with Dr. James McBride of Arizona State University (ASU). Titled Arizona: Heartland of the Southwest, the book is a comprehensive guide to literature on the history of Arizona. It will provide librarians in schools, colleges and universities a resource for helping their patrons with research on Arizona. It will also function as a referral tool for teaching faculty, students and others looking for source material on Arizona topics. The book includes an overview of Arizona history, a guide to libraries and repositories that have books, manuscripts and original source materials, and crucial political data. Cruz was a Senior Fulbright scholar in 1979 and is the award-winning author of Let There be Towns: Spanish Municipal Origins in the American Southwest, 1610-1810. He serves as consultant editor for the Journal of Arizona History and is on the history faculty of GCC and ASU West. Cruz may be reached at gilbert.cruz@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623.845.3690.
