Biotechnology Training at Glendale Community College
Glendale Community College (GCC) is responding to the Valley's growing Biotech Industry by training future biotechnicians. Educational commitment to this exploding new field is unfolding under the direction of GCC's Dr. James Tuohy.
The entire Maricopa Community College District (MCCD) has responded rapidly to Valley biotech needs by establishing the Biotech Workforce Initiative, a district-wide plan to develop and deliver biotechnology education. The Initiative design was driven by needs-assessment data from local companies. On May 26, Tuohy co-presented a paper to the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in Austin, Texas. The paper, titled "Arizona Bioscience Workforce Strategy," describes the evolution of the Initiative.
June 6 through June 9, Tuohy will attend BIO 2004 in San Francisco, a huge annual international biotechnology industry conference. He will bring cutting-edge information back to biotech students at GCC.
In addition to classroom and lab work, Tuohy's students are observing exciting biotech research through class field trips. On May 27, they toured ASU's Cell Biotechnology laboratory at the invitation of the lab's director, Dr. David Capco. The students received "an incredibly comprehensive tour of the facility and its resources" according to Tuohy. On June 4, his students will tour a tissue engineering laboratory in the Bioengineering Department at ASU.
