GCC Students Build "Outdoor Classroom"
The Agribusiness and Urban Horticulture Program at Glendale Community College (GCC) recently celebrated the grand opening of the "outdoor classroom" project. It was so named because, over several semesters, Landscape Construction and Horticulture students literally had a classroom that was "the great outdoors." Students learned course principles by building and landscaping an outdoor events site on campus. Located in the northeast corner of the campus, this recreation/learning area will be used for college events, club cookouts, instruction and seating for certain classes. Students mastered soil preparation and leveling skills, and paving and curbing skills. Masonry and brickwork skills were acquired in the building of low walls for seating and a large barbecue facility. The area has also been landscaped with desert plants as part of the xeriscape instruction. True hands-on instruction has provided a new and beautiful recreation area at GCC, located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. For more information on the Agribusiness and Urban Horticulture Program at GCC, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu/agribusiness/ or call 623-845-3168.
