Girl Will Travel More Than 7,000 Miles to Improve Reading at GCC

Six years ago, Jack Lin came to Glendale from Taiwan to study at Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management. While he was here, he heard about the Glendale Community College (GCC) Reading Clinic, an intensive summer program for chi ldren and adults. He brought his wife, son and daughter (then age 10) to the U.S. and enrolled them in GCC's Reading Clinic. They already spoke English, but wanted to read better and faster. Lin was impressed with the program and what his family learned. Then they all returned to Taiwan. Now sixte en, his daughter is being sent back to the U.S. from Taiwan to take this summer's Reading Clinic again. She will travel alone for more than 7,000 miles and stay with family friends while she is here. This easily qualifies as the farthest anyone has ever traveled to take GCC's Reading Clinic!

Thanks to GCC, people have been learning to read (or read better) since 1976. The acclaimed Reading Clinic is for children of any age and adults who have reading needs. Remedial and speed reading skills are taught. Reading specialists test, diagnose and set up an individual program for each student based on test results. Two four-week sessions will be held: June 07 to July 01, and July 05 to July 29. Cost of either four-week session is $360. The administrator of t h e Reading Clinic is Jo Lock, who gives each child a mandatory and comprehensive reading test in her home office prior to the start of the Clinic. This requires a separate $50 fee. Contacting Loc k at 623-845-2530, is the first step in the registration pro cess. To receive a brochure about the Reading Clinic, call GCC Community Education at 623-845-3805.
