GCC ACE-Plus Program and Students Receive Substantial Donations

Students in the ACE-Plus Program at Glendale Community College (GCC) have recently been the recipients of $6,000 in donations for college textbooks and other expenses. The Arizona Council of Hispanic Employment Managers donated $1,500, the Maryvale Hospital Volunteers gave $2,000, the Cartwright School District Education Foundation gave $2000, and the John F. Long Company gave $500. Anthony Johnson, an Independence High School senior who has participated and excelled in ACE-Plus for the last two years at GCC, has received a $39,000 scholarship to Harvard University. Five GCC ACE-Plus students from Trevor Browne High School, Maria Contreras, Eshawn Peterson, Brian Pullins, Daniel Rodriguez, and Ana Vega, have received the Dorrance Merit Scholarship which provides $36,000 to each of them for four years of college. ACE stands for "Achieving a College Education." It is a scholarship-based college preparation program designed to expose high school students to a college environment and course work, and teach them skills for success in college and personal life. The "Plus" stands for the many services, workshops and activities offered by the program in addition to the college classes. Students take evening and weekend college courses during high school, with tuition and fees paid by the program. For more information about the GCC ACE-Plus program visit http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/aceplus/ or call 623-845-3335.

GCC Nursing Students Learn About "Special Kids"

Nursing students at Glendale Community College (GCC) have had a field rotation at "Raising Special Kids" added to their curriculum. "Raising Special Kids" is a nonprofit organization which supports families of children with disabilities and special health needs in central and northern Arizona. All programs and services are rendered at no charge, and include referrals to other agencies, classes, parent-to-parent connections, help with preemies, partnerships with health professionals, a newsletter, and more. During their rotation, GCC nursing students receive an orientation to Raising Special Kids programs and services, and learn about real-life scenarios in family and community health. They meet with parents and spend time on pediatric wards observing the connections between Raising Special Kids and pediatric services. Director of Family Support Sylvia Ramos McLaughlin says, "I am proud that Raising Special Kids partnered with...Glendale Community College. We hope that the nursing students will leave our setting with an interest in serving families and children with special needs." For more information about the GCC Nursing Program, visit http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/nursing/ or call 623-845-3200.
