GCC Biotech Program Celebrates DNA Day, April 30

The growing biotechnology program at Glendale Community College (GCC) will celebrate national DNA Day with an open house at the college from 12-3 p.m. on Fri., April 30. Hosted by GCC Biotechnology Program Director James Tuohy, the event will be held in the Life Sciences Building, room 152 on the GCC campus at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The public is invited and the event is free. It will feature exhibits, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and light refreshments. DNA Day celebrates the 51st anniversary of the 1953 discovery of deoxyribonucleic acid, commonly called DNA, discovered at the University of Cambridge by British scientists James Watson and Francis Crick. Many scientists contend that it was the most significant discovery of the 20th century. For more information, contact Tuohy at james.tuohy@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845.3845. Free Gemstone Display at GCC Through May 16

Beautiful polished gemstones and other lapidary work is currently on display at Glendale Community College (GCC) through May 16. The exhibit, loaned by the Maricopa Lapidary Society, is located in the lobby of the GCC Physical Sciences Building at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The display includes stone etchings and carvings, wire wrapped gemstones, inlaid gemstones, faceted gemstones, and more. Lapidary, the art of cutting, polishing or engraving precious and semi-precious stones, is an ancient skill. The engraving of precious stones, also called glyptic art or gem carving, dates to India's Indus River Valley civilization in the 7th millennium B.C. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Physical Science Building hours are Mon.-Thurs. 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For a map of the campus, visit http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/index/campus.cfm?see=Physical_Sciences online.

2nd Free Public "Poetry Slam" at Glendale Community College, April 28

Following a popular "slam" in February, poetry lovers are invited to participate in another high-energy Poetry Slam at Glendale Community College (GCC) from 3:00-4:30 p.m. on Wed., Apr. 28. This free event will be held in the Language Arts Building (LA) room 141. Sponsored by the Black Cat Poets, GCC's poetry and literature club, the Slam celebrates National Poetry Month and is open to anyone over 18. All participants will have the opportunity to read in the first round. Judges will choose the line-up for the second round, so participants are advised to bring at least two poems they can read with energy and passion. Prizes will be given to the first and second place winners. Corbet Dean, a published Phoenix poet and past finalist in The National Poetry Slam, will perform a set of his own slams. Pre-registration for this event is required. For more information, a copy of the slam rules, and a registration form, contact English faculty and club sponsor Johnnie Clemens May at johnnie.may@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3538. Registration forms may also be filled out at the door. GCC is located at 59th and Olive Avenues in Glendale.
