DaimlerChrysler Donates $10,000 to GCC Automotive Program
Glendale Community College (GCC) recently received a $10,000 grant from the DaimlerChrysler Corporation in support of its College Apprentice Program (CAP) to train factory-certified technicians. This follows DaimlerChrysler's donation last year of a Dodge Viper--a car that currently retails for approximately $85,000. GCC also offers Ford's Automotive Student Service Educational Training Program (ASSET) and GM's Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) which also provide factory certification. Students in these programs are sponsored by a dealership and alternate paid internship weeks with classroom academic weeks spent at GCC. The college can assist interested students in finding a dealer sponsor if necessary. For students who desire broad training for employment in an independent repair facility, GCC also has a General Program covering service on several brands. Students can earn a one-year certificate in Automotives or a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS). Student interns become full-time service employees at the dealerships upon successful completion of the program. The income potential is $35,000 to $40,000 within two years of graduation, on average. Some experienced technicians earn over $100,000 a year. Local service managers have high praise for GCC automotive students. Richard Lopez, Service Director at Lou Grubb Chevrolet Arrowhead, says, "We have enjoyed 13 years of participation in GCC's ASEP program and have many top-knotch technicians to show for it. In fact, one of our Service Directors at another location is a former GCC ASEP student." For more information about GCC Automotive programs, contact Jay Covey at

Increased Scholarships Totaling $857,190 Awarded to GCC Students This Year
Representing an increase of 10.4% over last year's total, $857,190 in scholarships was awarded to 692 Glendale Community College (GCC) students for the 2003-2004 academic year. A Scholarship Luncheon was held on the GCC campus April 9 to thank the donors and to provide an opportunity for recipients to meet their benefactors. Sixty of the recipients and 41 of the donors attended, along with family members, GCC faculty and college dignitaries. GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph thanked the donors and then congratulated the recipients, saying, "It is my hope that your stay at GCC, made possible at least in part by generous donors, will allow you to fulfill your educational goals and to succeed in your chosen fields. I also hope someday you will be in a position to support GCC in helping other students achieve their goals as well." Four student speakers gave eloquent and moving accounts of how the scholarships they received have impacted their lives. Visit
