First 40-Year MCCD Employees Honored at GCC
Two Glendale Community College (GCC) employees, the first to teach for 40 continuous years in the Maricopa Community College District, were honored at an awards ceremony on April 6. Lyenatte Goff, mathematics faculty, and Phil Smelser, philosophy faculty, received gold watches from GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph, and congratulations from friends and colleagues. Randolph said, "It is an honor and privilege to have Professors Goff and Smelser at GCC, not simply due to their unequaled length of service, but because they are both outstanding teachers with vast experience that they are still sharing with our students." Also recognized were 71 other GCC employees, for service ranging from five to 35 years and totaling 985 years. For more information on GCC, visit www.gc.maricopa.edu or call 623-845-3314 to request summer and fall schedules of classes.
GCC Hosts Dramatic Public Readings for "OneBookAZ," April 21
Glendale Community College (GCC) will host a free public event celebrating OneBookAZ from 1-2 p.m. on Wed., April 21. OneBookAZ is a statewide program designed to bring communities together through literature and reading. It encourages communities across Arizona to read the same book and participate in discussion and programs centered on that book. This year's book is Life of Pi by Yann Martel. It is a daring, redemptive tale of survival in which an unusual 16-year-old boy named Pi survives a shipwreck and coexists in a small lifeboat with a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Students from GCC's internationally award-winning forensics team will perform dramatic readings from Life of Pi on the lawn north of the Testing & Disability Services Building (TDS). GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Ave. in Glendale. For information, contact GCC Librarian Mark Floor at
mark.floor@gcmail.maricopa.edu or at 623-845-3165. Visit

GCC Doubles Number of Tractor-Trailer Driving Classes Offered
The best-kept secret in truck-driving schools is at Glendale Community College (GCC). Its industry-lauded tractor-trailer driving program recently doubled the number of students it trains in a year, and now accepts 240 students annually. Students spend eight weeks on the GCC campus (four in the classroom and four driving) and then spend eight weeks as paid intern drivers with trucking companies. Upon completion, students receive a Tractor-Trailer Program Certificate. A better bargain than most private truck-driving schools, the program costs only $2,887.50, and many students qualify for federal financial aid. During field work, students receive substantial drive time, as GCC pairs only two students with an instructor in each truck. Large trucking companies, such as Swift Transportation, hire many drivers from the GCC program. According to Otto Welch, Director of Swift Driver Recruiting, "We are always pleased to hire GCC-trained students. In our experience, they have extremely high retention rates with our company and great safety records."
