GCC Receives Fire Truck From Peoria Fire Department
A recently retired fire truck in mint condition was donated by the Peoria Fire Department (PFD) to the Fire Science Program at Glendale Community College (GCC) on Mar. 5. The truck, a 1991 Pierce Fire Pumper, is valued at about $20,000. It will be used for any classes in the GCC Fire Science Program that require a fire vehicle. There are more than 1,000 students currently enrolled in the program, and GCC is the only community college in the country known to have a working city fire station located on its campus. Dozens of GCC graduates have become Peoria firefighters over the years, reflecting the productive relationship between the City and the College. Many dignitaries from Peoria and GCC attended the donation event, held at the Peoria Public Safety Facility. GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph said, "This gift will contribute substantially to our Fire Science training facility and will help ensure that a supply of well-prepared fire fighters will always be available to the communities of the West Valley and greater Phoenix."
Childhood Obesity Prevention Workshop for Families, Mar. 27
Responding to the alarming rise in childhood obesity and related health problems in the U.S., the Food and Nutrition Department at Glendale Community College (GCC) is offering a one-day "Childhood Obesity Prevention Course." Designed for families to take together, the class will be held Sat., Mar. 27, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in room T2-109 on the GCC campus, 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. The morning segment will focus on basic nutrition education, meal planning, healthy cooking and nutrition demonstrations. The afternoon component will focus on increasing children's physical activity to prevent obesity. This section, conducted by personal trainers, will offer new ways to motivate parents and children through age-appropriate games and activities. Obese children are at increased risk for high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and some cancers. Preventing and treating obesity in childhood and adolescence is a critical public health issue. The course fee is $80 per family, which includes up to four family members. Additional family members can register for $10 each. Children must be accompanied by at least one parent. For more information or to register, contact Dayna Ozen at
