GCC Alumni to Host Festive Fundraiser at Historic Sahuaro Ranch, April 2
Wine-tasting and non-stop entertainment will keep things lively at a festive Glendale Community College (GCC) fundraiser to be held off-campus at Historic Sahuaro Ranch on Friday, April 2, from 7- 10 p.m. The GCC Alumni Association and the Sahuaro Ranch Foundation will host the event to provide scholarships for GCC students and to support the Foundation. Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park is located at 9802 N. 59th Ave. in Glendale. Tours of the historic buildings, led by "re-enactors" in period costume, will include the newly renovated main house. There will also be music, wine and hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, and an art show. The West Valley community is invited to attend. GCC President Dr. Phil Randolph, a strong supporter of alumni events, says, "I invite our West Valley neighbors to attend this exciting evening to support both GCC students and the Sahuaro Ranch Foundation." Tickets are $25 per person. To purchase tickets, contact Esmeralda Acosta at

GCC Working Hard to Recruit International Students, Mirrors Recent Trends
After the events of 9/11 and subsequent tightened immigration laws, many colleges and universities experienced a significant reduction in the number of international students they enroll. Glendale Community College (GCC) is working hard to keep its numbers high. Ken Bus, Director of the International Student Program (ISP), reports that 101 foreign students from 36 countries now attend GCC. The program has rebounded from its "9/11 slump" and has seen some countries recently increase their export of students to GCC. Most notable of these is Korea, which now sends more students to GCC (17) than the prior leader, Japan. Bus says, "The U.S. government is more likely to grant visas to students who demonstrate a commitment to returning to their home country when their education is complete. The economic situation in Korea is really improving, meaning students are more likely to return home when they graduate. Thus, the government is accepting more Korean students lately." Bus was also pleased to announce that, for the first time ever, GCC has students from Cyprus, Syria, and Botswana. For more information on the ISP, contact Bus at
