Science Olympiad at Glendale Community College, Mar. 6
Watch bottle rockets launch and ramble with robots from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at GCC on Sat., Mar. 6, as the college hosts the 2004 Science Olympiad. More than 200 high school students from 14 schools statewide will participate. Other events free and open to the public include Storm the Castle (lawn west of Business building), Mission Possible (Student Union cafeteria), and Tower Building (gym). The awards ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union cafeteria. GCC is located at 6000 W. Olive Avenue in Glendale. Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing student interest in science, and recognizing science achievements of students and teachers. Tournaments are rigorous interscholastic competitions that stress team events for which students prepare during the year. SRP is the title sponsor of this event, donating $15,000 and in-kind services. SRP personnel will serve as judges during the competition and will present the awards. SRP is a strong supporter of K-12 education and donates more than $1 million every year to educational programs that focus on academic excellence. Bold Designs, Colors Featured in GCC Art Exhibition, Mar. 8-31
The acrylic paintings of GCC Art Faculty Emeritus Leonard Johanson will be displayed in the GCC Student Union Lounge Mon., Mar. 8 through Sun., Mar. 21. The exhibit will open with a reception in the Lounge for the artist on Mar. 8, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Johanson taught design and art history classes at GCC from 1965 to 1988. Now retired, he continues to paint daily. He uses bold design and brilliant color in his large-format acrylic canvases. His paintings are a visual feast of color and pattern, ever intriguing and changing. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Student Union is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily. "Faces of America" Community Dialog at Glendale Community College, Mar. 9
Anyone who has lived, worked, or gone to school in Glendale is invited to bring a family photo and share stories in a special forum at GCC that celebrates diversity and commonality on Tues., Mar. 9. "Faces of America," a popular annual event, will be held from 6-9 p.m. when the Glendale community is invited to the Student Union Lounge at GCC for this interactive dialog. A written statement of 500 words or less explaining "Why this photo is important to me" should be brought to the event along with each photo. Those who wish may have their photos included in a historic "Faces of America" website hosted by GCC at
