GCC Student Performance Wins at Regional Competition
The Glendale Community College (GCC) student performance of an innovative trilogy of humorous Japanese character plays was named one of four finalists at the Region 8 American College Theatre Festival at the University of California at San Bernardino on Feb. 15. Kyogen3 competed against more than 200 other plays during several levels of competition that led to this victory. This is the fourth time in five years that GCC has had a play at the Region 8 Festival. Kyogen3 was performed locally in September, presenting the three Japanese pieces to Valley audiences. At that time, the GCC team was selected to attend the competition in San Bernardino. A unique feature of the performance is the dynamic Japanese taiko drumming between sketches, performed by GCC students under the direction of Doug Nottingham. Kyogen plays became popular in medieval Japan. Originally they were peasant improvisation pieces that reflected the habits, customs, and lives of ordinary people in short, comic sketches. Over time they were taken over by the Japanese court and became court-produced, highly stylized farces. GCC adjunct faculty Joni Koehn is the play's director. As a regional finalist, the GCC team is now eligible to be invited to perform Kyogen3 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Those selections will be announced later this spring.
